All gin enthusiasts are invited! On World Gin Day, which is honoured globally on June 10, we ask you to toast this crisp and bubbly spirit, which is ideal for a variety of spring and summer cocktails. We speak with representatives from three Saskatoon distilleries about what makes their gins special and some of their preferred gin concoctions.

Did you know that Saskatoon has a large number of breweries and bars that specialise in cocktails? Spend a weekend or two exploring the greatest cocktail bars in Saskatoon or trying some of our unusual breweries in and around the city.

World Gin Day with Stumbletown Distilling

There are an incredible number of gins available (they have created 12 different gins so far!). For all flavour, Stumbletown Distilling has you covered. A powerful New Western-style gin created with regional components such sea buckthorn berries, birch bark, spruce sap, and rosehips is their most well-known Original Gin. Their Snap Pea Gin, which features notes of vibrant, fresh snap pea and melon, is a spring/summer favourite. Try their Original or Snap Pea in the Greenhouse, a gin-based spin on the garden gimlet (recipe below).

The Greenhouse

  • Cucumber slices
  • Mint leaves
  • Snap pea
  • ¾ oz. Lime juice
  • 2 oz. Snap Pea Gin or Original Gin
  • 1/2 oz. Simple syrup

Cucumber and mint should be added to a bar mixer and muddled. Shake the simple syrup, gin of your choice, and lime juice. Snap peas and mint leaves are used as garnish after a double strain is made into a coupe glass.

World Gin Day with Lucky Bastard Distillers

To produce a gin in the New Western Dry style, Lucky Bastard Distillers organically infuse their premium vodka with juniper, lemon peel, chamomile, cloves, anise, coriander, angelica root, and Saskatoon berries. In a Gin Gin Mule (recipe below), the combination of botanicals creates a flowery, citrus, and savoury flavour that is simple to appreciate. Notably, Lucky Bastard Gambit Gin is the province of Saskatchewan’s first legally produced gin since Prohibition!

Gin Gin Mul

  • 1 oz. Lucky Bastard Gambit Gin
  • ½ oz. Ginger syrup
  • 4 Sprigs of fresh mint
  • Lime wedge
  • Soda Water

Instructions: Gin, mint, ginger syrup, and lime should be combined in a rocks glass or mule cup. Muddle. Add some ice, then pour soda water on top. Before serving, stir, then top with a wedge of fresh lime.

World Gin Day with Black Fox Farm & Distillery

Take a day trip to Black Fox Farm & Distillery, which is conveniently located in the heart of the Canadian prairies, only a short drive south of Saskatoon. They use primary ingredients that are grown in their own prairie fields to create a variety of premium gins, such as Oaked Gin, Canadian Gin, Haskap Gin, and Cucumber Gin. A uPick flower patch, distillery tours, and alcohol samples are available on-site.

Haskap Mule

  • 1 oz. Black Fox Haskap Gin
  • Fever Tree Ginger Beer

Instructions: Pour Fever Tree Ginger Beer over ice in a glass. To make a magnificent float, slowly pour Black Fox Haskap Gin over the top.

Brunch is our favourite weekend meal. Lunch? On a Sunday?

Here is the guide to brunch in Saskatoon! Whether you like the classics or trying something new there is a brunch spot for you!

Odla

The sole farm-owned restaurant in Saskatoon is called Odla Restaurant, and it is situated in the storied Broadway area. The atmosphere for brunch is upbeat, joyful, and relaxed. Enjoy everything from a traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast to savoury pancakes with pulled pork! The pancakes are unbelievably delicious! On the weekends, mimosas are $5! Their patio in the summer is the ideal spot for enjoying coffee while people-watching!

Calories

Since 1986, the Broadway show Calories has been a mainstay. To provide the tastiest meals, the restaurant uses regional ingredients. Here, breakfast has an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. Order the quiche, a mimosa, and a wonderful latte! Please try the cheesecake if you have the time. At Calories, we welcome the additional calories!

Botté Chai Bar

Wanting something a little unique? Botté Chai Bar is the only place to go. The cuisine in Botté is influenced by Persian culinary customs. Enjoy unlimited Persian made tea or Turkish coffee to perk things up a bit. The dill feta omelette is my fave item from their brunch menu that I have eaten so far. Just thinking about it makes me drool.

OEB Breakfast Co.

You are aware that OEB is one of the best brunch spots in Saskatoon, as evidenced by the lengthy wait periods for tables. Therefore, if you’re going to brunch on the weekend, arrive early! Take advantage of mimosa flights, a variety of bagel and poutine breakfast options, and a stunning view of the Victoria Bridge.

Living Sky Café

The ideal location for a busy individual on the run is the Living Sky Café in downtown. Visit their market and pick up some coffee and kolaches, or spend a little time in their cosy restaurant to get away from the crowds. Everyone will be able to find something on the brunch menu that they like because there are so many selections available!

Hometown Diner

The stylish Riversdale restaurant Hometown Diner is a Saskatoon brunch institution. The room is luminous and vibrant, and the menu is chock-full of choices to suit every mood. Need something lightweight? Try the avocado toast! Do you want something cosy? Give that Ukrainian breakfast a try! Donut you want? Pick up that donut! What more could anyone want?

Park Café

Visit the Park Café for a traditional brunch experience! Along with the greatest fruit cup in town, they offer all the conventional breakfast selections you could want. Black and white images from the region’s past are used to decorate the walls of this retro cafe. It is a genuine throwback and one of YXE’s renowned brunch locations.

Hearth

The Remai Modern’s Hearth delivers a lovely breakfast! Try a traditional breakfast, a hash cooked in a lovely cast iron pan, or a flatbread with cured fish! Imagine yourself enjoying a fantastic brunch with a view of the river on a rainy Sunday, sipping a warm coffee, and then exploring the Remai Modern. In all honesty, it seems like a dream to me!

Garden Café

The restaurant at The Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre is called The Garden Café. Can you believe 200–300 people are served at brunch? Their brunch is legendary in every way! Everyone can find something on their highly accessible menu!

The Shoppe

Visit The Shoppe for a super adorable brunch experience! They can make any day better with their instagrammable pink interior! They provide brunch towers, bowls, and even breakfast sandwiches! The highlight of it all? From 8 am to 4 pm every day, they serve brunch!
