Leaving your pet behind while you go out and explore Saskatoon and all it has to offer is not easy. But fortunately, many places in the city allow pets, so you may take them on your trips. In fact, Chris Santella and D.C. Helmuth’s book 50 Places to Travel With Your Dog Before you Die lists Saskatoon as one of the world’s 50 best places to travel with your dog.
Listed below are numerous (but not all!) pet-friendly places in Saskatoon where you can take your travelling companion.
1. Saskatoon’s Dog Parks
Saskatoon has areas where you can play with your pet in public and without a leash. Look at spots like Pierre Raddison Park between 32nd and 33rd street or Avalon Dog Park. Try dog parks like Chief Whitecap and Sutherland Beach if you’re searching for a spot where your dog can run wild through the forest and play in the river. Two new dog parks in Hyde Park and Charlottetown Park are available for smaller pets. To utilise these parks, your dog must be under 40cm (16″) and under 9kg (20lbs). Your dog has to be able to follow come, sit, and stay orders in order to be well-behaved around both people and other animals.
2. Hotels
Many hotels in the city are pet-friendly. Alt Hotel downtown is one of the best, Not only do they provide a puppy pillow for your dog, but the views over Saskatoon are unrivaled.
Hot tips: the Hilton Garden Inn Saskatoon Downtown, Hampton Inn Saskatoon South, Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Saskatoon Airport, Delta Hotels Saskatoon Downtown and the Sheraton Cavalier have no fee. If you want ease-of-access to let Fido out to do his business, Country Inn and Suites by Radisson near the airport have doors direct to outside.
3. Meewasin Valley Trails & Cranberry Flats
Do you know anything about the YXE Underground? Those featured in the episode are Saskatoonians accomplishing incredible things. Eric Anderson, a local citizen and dog lover, devised and hosts the show. The Meewasin Valley Trails and Cranberry Flats are favourite hangout spots for Eric and his instagrammable dogs Sam and Wiley.
Eric had the following to say about the MVA:
“The Meewasin Valley Trails are a wonderful resource for Saskatoon. Sam and Wiley like exploring the trails with my wife and I, especially Cranberry Flats. They enjoy the wide open areas that Cranberry offers, whether it’s in the early hours of a warm morning or when the sun sets on a freezing January afternoon. Hiking the trails has been a fantastic way to discover our city’s natural beauty together. They immediately start planning their next adventure as soon as we arrive at home.
4. Restaurant Patios
During the summer, Saskatoon comes to life. The city’s patios are a popular place to enjoy a tasty meal and a cold beverage. Many of them also welcome pets.
City Perks Coffeehouse, d’Lish by Tish Café, Leopold’s Tavern, Cathedral Social Hall, Homestead Ice Cream (the outside bench area), and Bus Stop Refreshments are just a few establishments in the city that have pet-friendly patios. D’Lish by Tish Café’s patio is not pet-friendly, but you are welcome to clip your dog to the fence surrounding the patio.
Many of these places include water dishes for dogs, ensuring that your dog stays hydrated as well. Many other establishments have pet-friendly patios; be sure to contact in advance to confirm.
5. Breweries & Distilleries
The SLGA controls how much alcohol is served by mandating that taprooms, breweries, and distilleries offer two small meals to visitors. This implies that they cannot fully accommodate pets and must be listed as a licenced dining facility. Two locations, nevertheless, have gone above and beyond to allow your pet to join you on your visit.
You may bring your dog to Stumbletown Distilling‘s outdoor terrace to relax as you enjoy their full-service cocktail bar. Pets have always been welcome at Prairie Sun Brewery, and that hasn’t changed after they moved to their current home on Broadway a few years ago. Dogs are always invited to accompany their owners on the patio at nighttime.
6. Dog Days of Summer
As part of its annual Dog Days of Summer Event, Mayfair Pool welcomes dogs of all sizes for a complimentary dip in the water. Since there are only 60 dogs allowed in the pool at once, you must register online in advance to reserve a spot for your dog for an hour.
The occasion happens on Tuesday, August 22, this year. A new session just for little dogs (under 40cm or 16″ and 9kg or 20lb) as well as a dedicated pool time for service and therapy dogs are both available. Additionally, a BBQ fundraiser for the Saskatoon SPCA will be held there, with all revenues going towards its programmes.
